Poor Filipinos reduced to eating garbage

By Neal Cruz - Inquirer News Service - Oct 22, 2004

TWO young children died the other day because they ate rotten food recovered from a garbage can and brought home by their father. Did you get that? Poor Filipinos have been reduced to eating garbage -- literally -- and are dying because of it.

As the cliché goes, they're caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. They'll die of starvation if they don't eat, but they'll die anyway if they eat the garbage that they are able to scrounge from the trashcans.

Can you see the irony? Officials of government financial institutions take home millions of pesos in salaries and politicians travel in style around the world and eat the most expensive steaks while their constituents eat garbage! Generals amass wealth and squirrel them away in other countries while the people whom they are sworn to serve wallow in poverty! Our own President travels all around the country and the world with a retinue, shakes hands and delivers speeches and cuts ceremonial ribbons, while her constituents living in appalling conditions not very far from Malacañan Palace are dying because they are forced to eat garbage!

Blah, blah blah. SHUT UP. They eat garbage because they have all these kids when they can barely feed themselves. C'mon, do the math! WHy not go to the bottom of the problem? Sterilized all these damn poor people!

Aimee, you must be out of your mind. The problem does not stem from poor people who do not have the mental capacity to plan a family.

The problem is that all these senators and congressmen/women represent various constituents across the Philippines rake in the big bucks for their own self leaving their provinces stenched in poverty.

So the microcosm of life in the Philippines is this: "If I go to Manila, I can find a way to make money". These impoverished communities in the provinces take it upon themselves to try their luck in Manila because the people they voted to go to Manila and serve them are serving their own pockets.

Bring dynamic and sustainable jobs to the provinces and they don't have to go to Manila.

When they do go to Manila, they find themselves shit-out-of-luck. But this is still better odds than going back to their provinces and back to extreme poverty.

Aimee, you are the quintessential stupid ass Filipino that causes this problem. You are what a lot of regular Filipinos call matapobre. All you do is blame the poor. The problem stems from the top.

Filipinos got it all wrong. They thought they had to kiss public servants' as to get anywhere. It's the other way around. Public servants are obligated to kiss their constituents ass and bring them these sustainable, dynamic, and productive jobs.
